There is no need to bow out or apologize for leaving. We are self-responsible beings. Seal your practice as is appropriate for you, and leave as you must.
How does this work? What can I expect?
You register. You receive a link and password. You show up and sit virtually in community with people for up to 4 hours.
The meditation times will be mostly silent, from increasing from 20-40 minutes with supportive aid of "half-bell" during longer times.
The actual schedule and instructions will be sent via email Friday prior to the sit 12pm PT/3pm ET/8pm GMT
You can expect there will be some instruction, some encouragement, sitting, walking, sitting, walking, a short talk, sitting, walking, a break & snacks (bring your own), walking and sitting.
Is this a BIPOC only sit? Are white people also welcome? What if I’m not Buddhist?
Great. You're welcome.
This is not an exclusive space. You are welcome. Come with all your identities: race, gender, spiritual practice, religion or belief you hold.The only requirement is your desire to engage your life.
It's not a Buddhist meditation. Or a not-Buddhist. It's for beginners and advanced folks. It's for anyone that could use an extended period of time of intentional practice, whether to start, build, maintain or invigorate the practice you have.
If you are a history of mental health concerns, please check with your mental health professional that meditation is advised for your particular situation.
Do I have to come for the entire four hours?
No. And yes.
Rev. angel understands the unique value of having periods of returning to meditation practice over and over again. The Half-Day SIT is intended to provide a container for that kind of extended practice. You can just drop in lots of places. The key word here is extended.
That said, this time is for you. The strong encouragement is that you try to come for at least two hours. If you cannot, choose to be in integrity with yourself and come for whatever period of time you can.
Will there be time for a meal?
Yes. There will be a 30 minute break for nourishing yourself. Prepare a light meal or snack in advance.
Hmmm. Why pay if there are no 'real' costs?
You're not paying. You're making an offering as a gesture of honoring the container held by a teacher with decades of experience.
Amounts are suggested because most Westerners don't have a reference point for what it means to sustain people that have devoted so much of their lives to deepening their own practice, insight and wisdom so they can hold space for others to do the same.
Some will offer more. Some less. We trust it will all work out and not having high space costs means these offerings become more viable, especially for teachers that do not have (or wish to have) institutional support.
You don't "pay to sit." What you can touch on in a strong container are flashes of insight or expanded awareness that can be folded into the rest of your life.
So offer what makes you feel generous, rather than contracted.
No one will be turned away for lack of financial resources.
The timing doesn't work for me. Will there be another?
Eventually, of course. When, exactly, is unknown like many things these days.
Are donations tax deductible?
We are a non-profit fiscally sponsored by Wind Beneath My Wings Foundation. We don't issue tax receipts for less than $250.
What if I can’t “sit”?
You are welcome to come exactly as you are. Please set up your space in any way that is most supportive to you. "Come as you are." The setup is for those that are used to sitting in front of Zoom like a meeting. We encourage lying down, using cushions, nontraditional, whatever you need to feel present and supported.
What if I can’t/don’t want to do walking meditation?
The 5 minute periods of walking meditation are not required. It is meant to be supportive to return blood flow to people's ankles, legs and knees. We will adjust the instructions to clarify that they are intended as support.
I don’t have a camera and/or I don’t want to have my camera on
There is an encouragement to have your camera on. There is not a requirement. We ask people to turn camera on at least once if possible so we don’t have lurkers. As you may know, zoom-bombing is a thing that happens. And clearly we cannot make anyone turn cameras on and that isn’t how we hold the space. You are welcome to come and be at ease as you need. The space is for ease not stressing over anything.
Who sees the answers to the mental health registration questions?
The mental health questions are meant as support. No one reviews them other than Rev. angel. She uses them to know who, in a "room" of hundreds may need an eye to make sure they are (appearing) stable as in not trauma-triggered. We support many people with mental health challenges and in Liberated Life Network's SITs, even endeavor to direct people to a volunteer Mental Wellness Task Force should they wish. All sensitive data is currently protected by limited password access.
No one has ever been denied access. If people expressed an impulse to cause harm to themselves or others, this would be cause to check-in and possibly redirect them. That is at Rev. angel's consideration. There are several people in our regular SIT that have acknowledged and expressed mental health challenges. They are and remain welcome and supported in the best way possible given the realities of virtual space. Given the trauma people are experiencing, it would be negligent to not check and advise them to be in support with someone.
